A Quick Word With
|
| Stuart Dinsey |
As former editor of industry weekly CTW, and now founding editor of new rival MCV, Stuart Dinsey is one of the industry’s best known figures. He’s also bonkers about Chelsea FC. So, in a combined inquisition, we ask…
The games industry minus the PlayStation. Where would it be? Discuss.
In a horrible mess, dominated by PC and about a fifth of the size. And there still wouldn’t be enough publishers doing N64 games - because Nintendo would still be being bastards about their licensing fees to third parties. I’d probably be out of a job too, like several thousand others around the globe.
How do you see MCV’s role in the industry?
The industry bible, accessible and relevant to all. We’re free to everyone who wants one in the UK. Not just for retailers or MDs, but EVERYONE with a professional interest in the business. We cover all sectors properly - from a dedicated development page every week to international coverage thanks to our editions in Germany and the US. I want us to be to our industry what Music Week, Marketing, Campaign, Broadcast, Media Week, Variety and Screen International are to theirs. And it’s a trade title written by people who love games. Now there’s a novelty.
Can Chelsea win the Premiership?
Not unless Flo and Poyet come back soon. Or 17-year-old wonderkid Forsell goes goal bonkers between now and the end of the season. And Wisey staying on the pitch occasionally would help too.
Best local MCV boozer?
The Three Tuns, St. Andrew Street, Hertford. It's 20 yards away, dark, old and open all day.
How’s the change in initials affected your life? (from CTW to MCV, naturally).
Confusing. After 12 years at CTW, I was answering the phone as “CT...er, MCV” for the first six months. Nice and professional that.
Dennis Wise?
I love him, I really do love him. He’s Mr Chelsea. When he joined in 1990 with Andy Townsend he was the first decent player we’d signed for years. He loves the shirt. But if other Blues fans are getting fed up with him, I can understand it. Referees pick on him a bit, though. And he’s not naturally dirty, honest. He just tries a little too hard sometimes. But in these days of mercenaries, give me 11 Dennis Wises and I’ll show you a side much loved and respected by its fans. His girlfriend’s lovely too.
What’ll be the most significant thing to happen in the games industry this year?
Dreamcast obviously. Success or failure, it will have a huge impact on the market.
Radio 1 or Radio 2 in the office?
Virgin I’m afraid - but only because we’re slightly too far out of London to get XFM, which is the best station by a mile.
Ken Bates. Visionary or the devil incarnate?
Without him Chelsea would be bust or languishing in Division Two, probably a couple of places below Brentford. With him we are often a laughing stock. But he’s been in charge for 15 years now, so we’re getting used to the mad old tyrant.
That’s it.
No tenth question? You can’t do just nine. Go on, ask me another.
