Dear Future Gamer,
I'm writing to give my two pence about emulation. I agree that in an unrestrained form emulation is bad for the market but surely companies such as Nintendo and Sony are sticking their heads in the sand about the whole issue?
Sony in particular actually lose money on every PlayStation console they sell - it's on the games that they make their cash. It doesn't take a genius to point out that rather than suing people left right and centre, it would be beneficial to help the creators of decent emulators, sell them to the public for £40 which would then lead to an even bigger market for their games.
Some people then say this creates an even bigger market for piracy - well this is already a huge problem on both formats anyway. I don't think adding new customers will actually make things any worse overall (the number of pirates will just grow in relation to the number of new customers).
It really is time that Sony took their heads out of the sand instead of running around like headless chickens as soon as anything unexpected happens.
Yours - looking forward to the next issue,
Tim Bowerman
FG:
Sony, and the rest, want to make as much money as they possibly can. They see emulators as potentially reducing their profits. They don't like this. How they're going to deal with it remains to be seen. This week's feature sheds more light on the whole subject…
