According to weekly trade paper MCV, retail think it’s high time Sony launched a cut-priced Platinum range for a tenner. Tomb Raider 2 is due for a Platinum release next month and the original Tomb Raider remains the second best-selling budget game in the charts. But while retailers are crying out for a new pricepoint for old games, Sony haven’t yet confirmed that they will make such a move. But with the Dreamcast due to launch in September, Sony will more than likely cut the price of both software and hardware in the summer. And with news that PlayStation 2 will definitely be backwardly compatible, Sony should continue to expand their user base.

MCV also reports that GT Interactive are launching a budget PC range that will retail for as little as £2.99. Metal Gear Solid is still dominating PlayStation and multi-format games magazines – we’re sure some of them have reviewed it three times.

CTW features an, um, feature on whether it’s really possible to make money from selling budget games at £3 a pop. With labels launching all the time, the margins are getting squeezed, but hey, we’re getting cheap games. Heh, heh…
