Christina Erskine |
When not on the piste (Ski Gag No. 1), Christina enjoys the odd videogame. As luck would have it, Christina's job at Bastion Marketing enables her to play games at work. Sometimes. What tickles her fancy, though?
What games are tickling your fancy at the moment?
Sim City 3000. Though I feel as though I'm more rediscovering it than trying out anything new. And I've just started playing Rollercoaster Tycoon, which also vaguely reminds me of something. I just can't put my finger on what exactly ...
What was the first computer game you ever played?
Can't remember the name but it was a platform game on the Spectrum with blocks of ice and a polar bear in it. The first game I really got into and played into the night was Football Manager.
Any particular favourites from yesteryear?
Always a sucker for a football management game, so yes, I've enjoyed Championship Manager in its various versions. I loved all the Monkey Islands, the first one especially. I also got insanely into Way Of The Exploding Fist, which is odd because I never liked fighting games much before or since. Then there was Populous, and Populous 2 and 3 and I reckon I must have built the world's most enormous Theme Park when that came out.
What has been the biggest videogaming let-down for you last year?
The usual, really. Delayed release dates, lack of innovation in the PC games market - it always used to be that the software was pushing the hardware to the absolute limit. These days we have 3Dfx Voodoo graphics, 3D sound, DVD... and too many titles that are cash-in sequels or me-too games.
Any titles you're really looking forward to in the near future?
Alpha Centauri (because ... see below), Homeworld (because the previews look incredible), Tiberian Sun (for the heritage), Black and White (never yet met a Molyneux game I didn't like) ...
When all's said and done, what's your favourite game ever?
Civilization, in all its forms because it's the only game I've consistently come back to and replayed over a period of years, rather than weeks or months. And found new things to do or new ways to play. Because the model, for the original game at least, was essentially quite simple, yet gave the player a surprising degree of control and flexibility. Because it works as a game, rather than just being something pretty or wowie to look at.
