Archer Maclean (Awesome Games)

FG: Have you ever lied to an arcade attendant to get a free credit?
AM: Probably, and I certainly remember losing a 50p credit on a Missile Command machine when I was a student in the early '80s. It switched off halfway through a game. I was so determined to get my money's worth that I found an amazing trick to get as many games as I wanted, which, unfortunately, has to remain a secret. But it's also a small part of the reason why I ended up in the games industry.

FG: Who in the games industry do you most admire?
AM: It's hard to say. I usually admire intellectual achievement and creativity that leads to commercial success, rather than a successful business gained through ripping everybody off like some I can think of!

FG: What was the first videogame you ever played?
AM: Pong, 1973, in a seafront arcade in Bude, North Devon. By 1977 I was building my own microcomputers and programming simple 2D driving games.

FG: Have you ever cancelled a date to play a videogame?
AM: No. But I have cancelled a date to finish a videogame. She came round later anyway.

FG: What videogame websites do you have bookmarked?
AM: Loads. Too many to mention.

FG: Did you ever own a Jaguar?
AM: Yeah, a dark blue Mk11 3.4. Nice motor that.

FG: What game are you most looking forward to playing?
AM: A good one!

FG: What's the first game you look for in an arcade?
AM: Fast action 3D, or older driving games like Daytona USA or Sega Rally.

FG: Do you ever play videogames in the nude?
AM: Yeah, always. Or do you mean, like, dodgy ones, with videocameras and stuff? In which case I'm not saying.
