Michael Owen's Soccer '99 page 2 of 2
N64

How about the 'through ball'?
Natch. As with ISS the best way to split a defence is by use of the 'through ball'. Michael Owen's Soccer '99 takes it one step further by offering two versions of the trusty pass - you've got your traditional variant as well as the more erratic 'toe punt', which is that little bit faster while not quite as accurate. Successful execution of both moves relies heavily on the pace of your front men. So you might want to play as Liverpool.

Why? Aren't they just a bunch of overpaid failures basking in the glory of past success?
Tsk. Tch. Tchah. Although you may have a point. Anyway, Michael Owen - nippy little Liverpool and England striker. You see the connection. Even the French were impressed by his pace in the World Cup, nicknaming him 'La Fleche' ('the Arrow'). No doubt the developers made him the best player in the game. Perhaps he bullied them. Or something.

Oh right. So what teams are on offer?
There are a total of 210 teams to choose from. All the top international teams are in there, along with many of the world's great national leagues including English, (cough) Scottish, Italian, German, French and Dutch.

And the competitions?
The usual bunch - exhibition, league, international league, arcade cup, international cup and club cup.

What about the commentary? Not, er Ron Atkinson?
The dubious honour of official game commentator goes to Peter Brackley of Football Italia fame, with additional 'informed' comments from the perpetually bored-sounding Ray 'Butch' Wilkins. Their performance on the PlayStation version is actually highly creditable, so expect to hear less of the same on the N64.

Less?
You know - cartridges. Limited size. Best comments only. That sort of thing.

Quality over quantity.
Exactly.

So no Andy Gray.
Tinker.

*The graphics and animation are of an exceptionally high standard
*Choose from 210 teams
*Loads of complex combos to master
*All the goals are of the spectacular variety
*Ron Atkinson doesn't do the commentary
