Great Videogames Through The Ages
|
| Dragon's Lair (Arcade) |
Released in June 1983, Dragon's Lair became an instant classic - it was the first game to utilise laser disc technology. Created by Rick Dyer and animated by Don Bluth, Dragon's Lair stuck in the minds of anyone who saw it and soon became the topic of many excited playground discussions.
To call Dragon's Lair a game may be slightly inaccurate. After a few goes it became clear that it was actually an interactive movie, that was far more enjoyable to watch than it was to play. The cartoon simply ran its course, with the player deciding left, right or attack at key moments, thus choosing the next animated sequence. It certainly wasn't easy - the accurate timing of moves was essential to success - and it served primarily as a memory test. There was no way that you could fluke it first time around, you simply had to learn from your mistakes.
Rumour has it that Dyer and Bluth have teamed up once again and are currently working on an all-new version of Dragon's Lair for the arcades. This time, however, it will be fully interactive and will feature the same key characters - Dirk the Daring and the beautiful Daphne.
