The Language Of Videogaming
Retro

'Denoting something associated or revived from the past.' So says Collins. Retro-gaming is becoming increasingly popular, due to the proliferation of emulators and websites which cover the old classics. Not everyone, it seems, is quite so keen on allowing folk to play these treasured games, titles which are direct descendants of today’s Actua Soccers and Duke Nukems. It deprives the writers of these games of royalties, they claim. But the truth is, games from the late '70s and '80s are unlikely to be sold as commercial packages and depriving people the right to play seems mealy mouthed in the extreme.

It's important that videogaming has a history, a cultural context in which it can be viewed. What if we couldn't listen to The Beatles or Elvis? Just because they’re not around now, doesn’t mean the heritage shouldn't be celebrated. You can pick-up Atari, Williams and Namco packages for the PlayStation, and Galaxians is still a joy. Better than some of the games released last month, too.
