Great Videogames Through The Ages
Pang! (Amiga)

As with most classic games, the premise behind Pang! is simplicity itself. You control a little fella at the bottom of the screen armed with a harpoon, faced with the task of popping balloons. Easy, eh? Not really. You started out with a couple of huge balloons bouncing around the screen, which were easy to hit. The problem being that upon impact, the balloon would split into two smaller ones and so on, until the smallest balloons have all been popped.

This near-perfect arcade conversion from Ocean was best enjoyed with two players in co-operative mode. There were 17 different countries in which to show your skills and power-ups aplenty, from the double harpoon to the Vulcan missile. Other items include dynamite, which caused the balloons to split to their smallest size (not always welcome!) and a clock, which would stop the balloons from moving for a few seconds.

It doesn't really sound that exciting when you see it written down - you just have to play it to appreciate how addictive it is. Think Bubble Bobble or Tetris and you can't go far wrong in terms of sheer fun and replay value.
