Great Videogames Through The Ages
Head Over Heels

Back when isometric 3D was the only way to view your games, new releases would usually fit into one of the two genres around - shoot 'em up or isometric 3D adventure/puzzle game. One of the best examples of the latter genre was this little gem, featuring two characters, Head and Heels.

The great thing about this game was that you had to use both characters to solve certain puzzles, and you're way ahead of me here: yup, you had to get Head to stand on Heels' head (Head Over Heels - d'ya geddit? Oh never mind) in order to access different parts of the levels, complete puzzles and so forth. Head was able to fire doughnuts at baddies and jump large distances while Heel was fast and could carry things. Get the two working together and their abilities were combined.

At a time when the 8bit machines (and we're talking 1987 here) were hearing their death knell, HoH was a shining example of how far the little machines could be pushed technically, how clever level design had become an important part of the gameplay and how innovation could breath new life into a very crowded genre. Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond's Head over Heels certainly deserves its place in the Great Videogames archive.
