| PlayStation Price Cuts - What You Think page 2 of 4 |
I was one of the many who bought more games as a result of the PlayStation price cuts. Driver, V-Rally 2 and Bomberman have all found their way into my games cabinet, with Ape Escape to follow shortly.
I would have bought Driver at full-price anyway, but V-Rally 2 was certainly more of an impulse buy. The 10/10 review in OPSM brought the game to the front of my mind, but having been unimpressed by V-Rally 1, the sequel wouldn't have been a game I'd have bought at £45. A £30 price tag made it more tempting though, and it has proved to be as good as the review suggested it would be.
Bomberman at £28 (MVC discount price) was another impulse purchase. A lukewarm review meant that a £45 price would have scared me off, but at £28 it was worth taking a chance on and will no doubt be played for many months. Ape Escape I may well have waited for or picked up mail order, but the £30 price tag again demands immediate attention.
Would I buy more games at this price point? Well, I've always felt that high initial prices tend to cool the interest somewhat. If a game is brilliant, the price is of less consequence than if it's just an "I'll get that one day" game. I place a perceived value on a game. Driver, for example, I would have paid £45 for, but not V-Rally 2, although they are spending equal amounts of time on my PlayStation at present. Bomberman is not (in my opinion) a £45 game, but £28 is a comparative bargain in the games world, so I snapped it up. Had it not been reduced I would have waited until its price lowered to the amount of money I was prepared to pay for it.
Yes, I'd buy more games at a lower price. I know how much I'm willing to pay for Final Fantasy 8 when it's released and if the initial price point is at or below that level I'll buy it immediately. If not, I'll wait until either the price drops to my level, or my interest and enthusiasm levels rise to meet the retail price.
