PC vs Consoles... The End

Dear Future Gamer

In response to Alexander Moller's letter (FG35) advocating the removal of console games from the magazine to focus wholly on PC games, I find his opinion puzzling to say the least.

I have a PC, N64 and PSX, and enjoy playing games on all for different reasons. I read Edge every month and Future Gamer every week and I don't skip the reviews of games on formats I don't own. The contrasts and similarities between formats are fascinating. Indeed, the cross-fertilisation is the key to a constantly evolving computer games scene.

How many ideas have been borrowed from one format to appear on another? How often when reading reviews of new games do we see console game elements in a PC game and vice versa? How far do we take it? Do we ignore a game on the PC because it's too 'consoley'? Does Alexander vet his purchases thoroughly for console gameplay elements before he buys? I think not.

Alexander doesn't appear to have any real interest in games per se, and most probably thinks that good games have to run on a 550MHz Pentium III with a Voodoo3 graphics card. Alexander, just because the screenshots look good, that doesn't necessarily make it a good game.

Anyway, why am I concerned about the opinion of someone who thinks an N64 joypad is an inferior control method to a keyboard and a mouse?

Steve Wright

FG: That's what we've thought all along, Steve. Alexander created a bit of a stir with his letter but he's been fully put straight so it's time to move on to other subjects.
