Issue 39 - August 5, 1999

A Site For Sore Eyes
Eclipse

A solar eclipse takes place on Wednesday August 11. They don't come around too often, either - the last time one visible from the UK mainland was back in 1927, and the next one's due in 2090. So, it's probably best you get out of bed before midday next Wednesday. The moon will pass between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow across the country, albeit for only two minutes and six seconds.

As one might imagine, there's a wealth of sites surrounding the eclipse. The UK Eclipse Group details just about everything you need to know, including where to go, what to do, how to view the eclipse without damaging your eyes and the weather prospects, as well as a detailed explanation of the different types of eclipses.

Basically, you need to be down in Cornwall or south west Devon to catch the eclipse in its totality (weather permitting - if it's cloudy, well, don't even think about it). Quite how many people will be in Cornwall doesn't bear thinking about, but don't expect clear roads.

The site is well worth visiting, and it'll probably convince you that you should be there.
