Feedback Special: Tomb Raider 4

We recently ran a letter about whether Core have gone far enough with their Tomb Raider franchise in light of the details that have emerged about the game. Here's a selection of your thoughts on the whole TR phenomenon.

A lot of magazines and online news sites are doing their best to pre-judge (and execute) Tomb Raider IV. I really don't see why. A lot of people forget that the first Tomb Raider game was a bona fide classic. When it came out, nothing on the PlayStation could touch it and it was involving and entertaining. People bought it because it was an incredible game; not because of Lara Croft, but because it was well designed, exciting and incredible fun.

Unfortunately, Tomb Raider II managed to mess up everything that had been right about the first game. The central character was turned into some kind of pixellated celebrity and the gameplay was removed; the puzzles were diluted and the action was increased. Tomb Raider was fun because it didn't focus on running around and killing things. Tomb Raider II lost the balance of the first and has languished uncompleted on my shelf for a year and a half.

The third game in the series reduced the action and moved back towards the design of the first, and it was a massive improvement over Tomb Raider II, but everyone I know who loves the original Tomb Raider agrees that TRIII, while coming close, is still not as good.

So, Last Revelation then? Well, from the announcement it sounds as if it might be taking another step back to the classic Tomb Raider gameplay and I for one will be quite happy if it does.

For me, Lara can go on forever. She's the first game I ever played on PC so I could never get fed up of her. Maybe the games were getting a bit too much, killing everything in sight and not being quizzical, but rumour has it that it's going back to basics so good luck to her. She'll always be my Christmas cracker and I hope she will for many years to come.
