| Chessmaster 2 |
| PlayStation |
From: Mindscape |
Gadzooks! Chess on the PlayStation? Actually, this is Mindscape's second stab at simulating chess; the first was Chessmaster 3D, which was released over three years ago. Chessmaster 2, as the title almost alludes, is essentially a sequel, although quite how you produce a sequel to a game dating from ancient times is a moot point. Nonetheless, here it is, offering both 2D and 3D incarnations of Garry Kasparov's second favourite board game - he prefers Snakes and Ladders, apparently. The game's value is mainly to the single player, particular one who's keen to learn about what the castles and horses do. Visually it's excellent, and there are a number of historical pieces and eccentric, arty boards. Anyway, it's chess and nothing else.

| WWF Attitude |
| PlayStation |
From: Acclaim |
Wrestling games have improved massively in the past couple of years. The WWF moniker has always guaranteed that a hardcore of wrestling fans will purchase whatever hits the shelves, but not only have many wrestling games of late been both proficient and accurate fighting sims, they're often bloody hilarious. The good news is that WWF Attitude works beautifully well. Forget the wealth of options (although the Career mode is excellent), this not only looks superb (rendered characters), it wrestles like the very Devil. Add in a four-player, tag-team option and you're looking at the best WWF game to date. There's even a brilliant Create-a-Wrestler option where you can add spangly pants and mullets until your heart's content. Super stuff.
