Raven Software

With two eagerly awaited games in production, Raven Software are a team to keep an eye on. Kenn Hoekstra, Project Administrator at Raven, talks us through the company's past, present and future.

Brothers Brian and Steve Raffel founded Raven Software in 1988. With a team of five people, they produced the spectacular 3-D dungeon game Black Crypt for the Amiga platform. Published in 1992 by Electronic Arts, Black Crypt was nominated for Game of the Year in the Arcade Adventure category and won the Super Accolade Award from Amiga Action magazine. It's widely regarded as one of the top 100 Amiga games of all time.

Raven Software went on to create:

  • ShadowCaster
  • CyClones
  • Heretic
  • Hexen
  • Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
  • Necrodome
  • Hexen II
  • Mageslayer
  • Take No Prisoners
  • Hexen II Mission Pack: Portal of Praevus
  • Heretic II

Today, Raven Software's 50-strong team continue to broaden their gaming horizons by developing ambitious real-world and science fiction action games. Soldier of Fortune is pushing the 3-D accelerated Quake II engine to its absolute limits, providing first-person action gamers with the most realistic military combat action gaming experience ever. Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force unites Raven with Paramount Pictures to develop an action-packed thrilling ride for Star Trek fans and action gamers alike.

Soldier of Fortune is due out in November/December 1999 and Voyager: Elite Force is scheduled for a first quarter 2000 release.
