Mini-Review
Madden NFL 2000
PlayStation From: EA Sports

Another year, another Madden. This one is the usual blend of slick presentation, staggering statistics and yankee-doodle-dannery, containing everything the gridiron fan could wish for. But is it actually any different to last year's offering? Well, thankfully, it's not just a case of updating the rosters again as Madden NFL 2000 improves on its predecessor in every department. The graphics aren't exactly a quantum leap, although everything appears to have been tweaked in order to keep framerates high. There aren't many new plays to choose from, which is a bit of a shame, but there is an excellent play editor with which to baffle your opponents. Strangely enough, we still enjoy playing the Mega Drive version more than this one. Okay, so you don't get the fancy commentary and action replays, but who cares about that? Not John Madden, if this is anything to go by - he's never sounded so bored. All in all, this is a welcome addition to the Madden franchise, but don't bother buying it if you've got last year's model.

Mini-Review
Panzer Commander
PC From: Mindscape

We haven't seen a decent tank sim for ages, so when this came into the office we greeted it with open arms. We quite enjoyed it too, mainly due to the lack of quality opposition in the genre. It's all very realistic, you see, as you take command of one of 24 different tanks. Each handles as it should, with some slow yet armed to the teeth, and others nippy but lightly armoured - the choice is yours. As the lead tank, you'll be issuing orders to the rest of the platoon, like 'go' and 'stop'. Okay, so it's not quite that simple, but it's not exactly far from the truth either. Worst of all, your minions aren't exactly handy to have around when the heat is on - you'll be scrapping it out against a whole enemy column while your 'mates' struggle to negotiate the terrain. Sadly, this is only one of many annoying flaws that conspire to ruin what could be a decent game. Those lucky enough to have Internet access will be able to address these issues with a patch or two, and therefore slap another 10 per cent on the score.
