Final Fantasy VIII page 3 of 3
PlayStation

Phone: Ring! Ring!
Golem: Argh! Precious!
[He answers the phone]
Golem: Yes?
Darth Vader: Is Luke there?
Golem: No.
Darth Vader: If you see him, can you tell him his dad called?
Golem: Yes.

Conan: ...but, like you say Gandalf, there are genuinely well-designed moments that make up for weaker sections and sub-plots. I do wonder if it's a translation thing, though.
Atreides: But those FMV sequences... they're like a dream come true.
Deckard: What? Electric sheep?
Atreides: No. But if one of your dreams, y'know, just happens to be 'to see the best CG FMV sequences in a videogame, ever', you'll not be disappointed. Because FFVIII has them, and they are. And there are loads of them, all mixing seamlessly with the action. This is, in all possibility, the most stunningly attractive game the PlayStation has ever known.

Conan: There are loads of secrets to find, too. Hardcore gamers will, no doubt, want to complete it twice - the second time being an attempt to get all the Guardian Forces and see everything the game has to offer.
All: Sigh.
Achilles: How am I going to make a living? I haven't felt this alarmed since that incident with the charity footy game against Paul Ince, Julian Dicks and David Batty when I wore those tight-fitting sandals...

Luke Skywalker: Evening, all! Have I missed anything?
Golem: Your father rang.
Luke: What? No! NOOOOOOOO!
Gandalf: Hey, Luke! If you're 'stumped', I'll give you 'a hand' to find a decent therapist! 'Anakin' help you, I'm sure! Ho! Ho! Ho!
All: Ha! Ha! Ha!

FG verdict
Brilliant. Like its predecessor, FFVIII defies classification. With more depth than an Alan Hansen squad appraisal, its occasionally weak dialogue isn't a major flaw. Be sure to cancel all arrangements before you buy it, though... 94%
