What of in-game action?
Stand by! There are 40 missions taken from real-life combat scenarios across two theatres of war: the Barents Sea and the Indian Ocean. DI put great store in their flight model and reckon the game features 'real-deal' avionics which are faithfully modelled on what the real Super Hornet has, including all the full auto-pilot facilities of the actual plane. Which is nice.
Does it look any good?
Check out those screenshots. FA 18E Super Hornet is right up there with the best of today's flight sims, featuring 3D terrain, such as towns, bridges, industrial facilities, roads, etc, all taken from satellite data.
The emphasis is on realism then?
Yes, but that shouldn't deter the arcade combat fans. There's a 'quick start' air-air and air-ground mode, and the head-head network mode, enabling 24 players to battle against each other, should fill a few lunch hours.
Anything else?
I haven't mentioned the realistic weather, have I? Don't expect it to be all smooth up there - there'll be thunderstorms and blizzards to fly through, and don't expect them to be just during the day too. Then there's the authentic wingman control options.
Crikey - they've got the lot!
The US Navy certainly like it - they're only testing the real plane themselves at the moment but have been using demos of the game at air shows in the US in order to tempt young, impressionable Americans into becoming servicemen.
Wow!
That's 'Wow! Sir!' to you...
Interactive carrier decks to contend with
Interactive virtual 3D cockpit to play in
Hands On Throttle And Stick (bleuch!) support
Highly accurate flight model and 'real-deal' avionics
We've seen a lot these lately - let's hope this one's special enough to stand out
