Dreamcast Release: November From: Sega




The Formula 1 season may be over but speed freaks everywhere are gearing up for the release of the hottest racing title on the Dreamcast so far. We sent a couple of our lads for a mooch around the pit garages...

Another Grand Prix racer then.
Another, yes - but not just any other. True, it's merely the latest offering from regular racing game designers Video Systems, but for their first Dreamcast title they've built a monster new engine from the ground up, and it looks like they've created a game that uses a lot of the potential of Sega's console.

Really?
The first thing you notice about it is the stunningly life-like scenery. The trees, the track surfaces, the buildings, the shadows, the spray - it all looks so realistic. And the graphics are just one example of how the game pays incredible attention to detail.

Go on.
World Grand Prix apparently boasts the highest ever polygon count for an F1 console game. All the cars are superbly textured and appear just as they did in the 1998 season (which you can re-stage, if you like). It has great rendered win, lose and pit stop sequences and you can even see the drivers' heads react to virtual G-force when they take tight corners. Enough for you?

It sounds so impressive it's almost over the top.
I know what you mean. Obviously the people at Video Systems wanted to treat their gamers to a racing experience like they can see on television, and it looks like they've succeeded, even to the point of putting cameras in the same positions by the track as they do in real life. This means that when you see the replay it really is just like watching yourself on telly.
