Great Videogames Through The Ages
Spindizzy (Spectrum)

Another Spectrum classic enters Future Gamer's hallowed Hall of Fame, and a little belter it was too. It was much like Marble Madness in that it sported an isometric view and involved moving a small triangular 'marble' around a series of levels with realistic inertia and some devious puzzles. You were a reconnaissance droid and the object of the game was to map your environment, which was easy enough when you had power, but that precious commodity kept running out and so finding new power pick-ups was constantly on your mind. And were they easy to access? Of course not.

Spindizzy was a masterpiece of balanced and well-paced games design, which is why this simple puzzler was so maddeningly addictive. It received masses of critical acclaim but never achieved huge commercial success, although it did manage to win the hearts and minds of those brave punters willing to put the effort into mastering the game. It's on their behalf that Spindizzy is honoured here.
