JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Dreamcast Release: March 31 From: Virgin

Here's one we never expected to see in Europe. Capcom's Dreamcast onslaught takes a zany twist with this wacky 2D fighter.
Andy Ashwin

The name's crazy enough! What's it all about?
Does it really matter? It's a 2D fighter from Capcom, for flip's sake!

I'd like to know, damn you.
Firstly, JoJo isn't the name of the main character. In fact, there isn't a character called JoJo in the game. There's a Joseph and, furthermore, a Jotaro. Do you get it?

No.
Secondly, the game is indeed rather bizarre. Thirdly, there's an adventure mode, of sorts.

JoJo's... Bizarre... erm... Adventure!
Ta-da! The game's based on a popular Manga comic, a fact sure to please hardcore Japophiles. You know who we're talking about - the avid collectors of anything pertaining to Japanese culture. The guys and girls who talk incessantly about Sailor Moon, Densha de Go! and Tokimeki Memorial 2.

What?
Hmph. You probably won't like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure very much then. We've played the preview code quite extensively and found it... interesting. It's your standard Capcom fare, with nicely drawn characters and backgrounds and some over-the-top combos, but it's way too flat.

Flat as in 2D?
Yes, but it's not just that. There's nothing wrong with 2D, as you saw in the Street Fighter III: Double Impact preview last issue, but JoJo's is more of a curio than an essential purchase. The 'stand' system is truly deserving of the words bizarre, wacky and zany. A stand is a kind of spiritual helper, summoned to assist in the kicking of buttocks. It seems that your stand stays with you for pretty much the whole fight, as does your opponent's, making for some two-on-two mayhem of a madcap nature.
