Great Videogames Through The Ages
Driller (Spectrum)

Back at the beginning of 1988, the concept of full 3D in games was still just that; a concept. Then inventive Incentive Software came up with a programming technique called Freescape that gave worlds a fully explorable 3D environment where every object could be viewed from any angle. And they managed to get a half-decent game out of the engine too.

Driller was a kind of puzzle-cum-action adventure game in which you were attempting to set up drilling rigs on some remote moon. The puzzles were entertaining, though not the most thrilling or logical, and there was a vast amount of experimentation involved. Still, Driller was a stunning piece of software for the 8bit era and spawned a couple of sequels, including Total Eclipse (and one we can't remember). We salute Driller here more for its technical advancement of gaming than the actual game itself, but if you ever come across it, load it up and marvel at how advanced it was for the age.
