Chalk your cues: Codemasters have got a new snooker sim out. "Go on, Jimmy!"
Gideon Kibblewhite
A snooker sim. Do we really need another one? After all, snooker is one of those 'indoor' sports which hardly requires translation to a games console.
Have you got a snooker table in your house?
No.
Well then.
But snooker sims tend to be notoriously difficult and complex blighters to get to grips with. Remember Jimmy White's Cue Ball? Great game, but it had more icons than a Hollywood awards ceremony and more menus than a large restaurant.
True, but this is a Codemasters sim we're talking about here, and they tend to think long and hard about what PlayStation owners want from their console before jumping off the deep end. That's demonstrated well in World Championship Snooker, which has you down and cueing well in no time and has enough nice touches to leave 'Whispering' Ted Lowe drooling into his whiskey.
Is the Voice of Snooker commentating, then?
No. The Irish fella, Dennis "That was a hard one to pull off" Taylor, is.
Surely not.
Afraid so. But WCS has almost everything else you could ask for.
Such as?
A great intro, complete with the BBC's snooker theme music, for one thing. In fact, the presentation all round is so superb it's hilarious. When you walk out for your match a packed crowd gives you a splendid ovation, and when you pull off a fine break... well, you know how knowledgeable snooker fans are.
