Ridge Racer 64 page 2 of 2 |
N64 |
So Ridge Racer 64 looks and drives like a dream, but what you gain in quick thrills you lose in longevity. There are only three tracks, two of which are taken from previous versions, with three possible routes on each one. Unlocking everything, including the 25 cars, won't take much longer than a weekend, particularly if you've already played Revolution. If you were expecting something as big as World Driver or Top Gear Rally 2, you'll be disappointed, but then that's not what Ridge Racer is all about.
Having 'finished' the game, the time trials prove to be every bit as good as those in F-Zero X and Mario Kart. Shaving tenths, then hundredths of a second off your best lap times is hypnotic. You'll find yourself driving by instinct alone, anticipating corners rather than looking for them, and a sixth sense will let you know how good your lap was before the time flashes up on the screen - the mark of a great racing game.
The fast multiplayer mode is simply the icing on the cake. If you want to play against some friends then you've got the choice of going together in a straight race or taking turns to crack those lap times. A couple of extra tracks would have been most welcome, but as it stands, Ridge Racer 64 is a comprehensive and enjoyable enhancement of a top class original, and arguably the best of the series so far.
