The Guncon works as well as you'd expect this quality piece of hardware to, and those geniuses at Capcom have retained the adventure elements of the series. Shooting off the screen will set the view into motion, while pressing the A and B buttons on the side of your shooter allows you to steer left or right. It's ingeniously done, although using the Dual Shock pad can be better in some ways. Though the Guncon gives an advantage in accuracy, the Dual Shock gets over its shortcomings by providing you with an semi-automatic function by pressing the L1 button. Your view spins round to the nearest enemy or, even handier, the next door to go through.
Accuracy may be improved using the Guncon, but when you're shooting your foes there's no difference between shooting them in the head or shooting them in the body. It would seem that RE Survivor wasn't given the same amount of attention as the other titles in this series. Perhaps due to the uniqueness of the gameplay, this was probably more of an experiment that will no doubt be followed up. For the time being, running around and taking on zombies face to face is still loads of fun.
The storyline is a bit patchy, but the clever twist is certainly surprising. However, the cut-scenes are really cringeworthy as the script is a bit cheesy. It doesn't help that the figures on-screen move like puppets on strings either, nor that there's a lot less interaction with the scenery as compared to the other RE games. Overall though, things still look pretty lush and there are definitely a quite a few moments that'll make you shriek with fear - getting close up to a licker or a giant spider is a lot more unpleasant than usual...
Though it's got a few flaws, it's definitely a tasty new addition to the Resident Evil mix and it can only get better. Has anyone wondered what the PlayStation2 will have as its Guncon successor?
