Great Videogames Through The Ages

| Way of the Exploding Fist (Spectrum) |
Melbourne House published this game back in '85 when the beat 'em up genre was nothing but a couple of fighting games at most. Then along came this little beauty. Limited to just 16 moves and moving at a snail's pace compared to today's PlayStation wonders, WOTEF managed to be a completely absorbing and enjoyable punch, kick, and duck fest.
The player started off as a novice and fought successive bouts against a single opponent in a 2D manner (that managed to convey a sense of 3D rather splendidly) in an attempt to make it to 10th Dan. This was achieved by besting the opponent in a bout of three rounds. The game was particularly fun to play because with limited moves and time to react you actually had to think about what moves you were going to make and what counters you thought your opponent was going to chuck back at you.
The game was translated to the C64 where it found similar favour and though a sequel appeared, the magic was lost. We at Future Gamer salute the classic game that was truly the Tekken and Virtua Fighter of its day.
