Great Videogames Through The Ages
|
F1 GP (Amiga) |
Geoff Crammond has a programming track record envied by many. Not only did he create one of the greatest 8bit racing games in Revs, and one of the best head-to-head racing games in Stunt Car Racer (the subject of an earlier Great Videogames...), he also brought us the original and highly innovative Sentinel (the subject of... etc, etc).
But it's for his racing simulations that Geoff's best remembered and back in 1991 he brought us an Amiga racing game that not only proved itself to be one of the best Amiga games of all time, but surely one of the best computer games of all time. The title leaves little doubt what this game's all about and though the game was all official and everything, it was the gameplay that marked it out as special.
Realism was the key to F1 GP's charm. Jumping into a car and being able to beat the opposition in the first race was never going to happen. Practice was much needed, and even the use of one or two of the in-game driving aids (especially the right line indicator). But, as with all great games, the practice paid dividends and it actually became possible to drive the cars properly and even overtake things!
The game translated very well to the PC where if garnered more fans, and spawned the obvious sequel. Satisfyingly, F1 GP2 was also a cracking game and Geoff is currently working on F1 GP3, due for release er, when Geoff thinks it's finished. However long that takes, the wait will almost certainly be worth it.
