Skimming the cream off the paper press

Hold onto the edge of your seats, readers. Hot front page news in CTW (Computer Trade Weekly) this week regards Mothercare's plans to stock children's software in 21 of their 339 outlets. Insert your own Noddy joke... NOW.

Meanwhile, CTW confirms that Konami are planning to set up a large-scale European development studio somewhere in the UK. They haven't got anyone to run it yet. Perhaps they could advertise the post. CTW also reports the financial results of Sega, Sony and Nintendo. Sega posted losses which could result in them shedding 1,000 jobs, mostly in Japan. Sony's profits are shrinking as the sales of PlayStation hardware decrease. Add to this the cost of developing PlayStation 2 and things are a bit tougher than in the past couple of years. Hey ho. Nintendo, meanwhile, expect a 20 per cent profit rise. Oh, and look out for the Official UK PlayStation Magazine lorry in a shopping centre near you. No, do. 'Hey, let's do the show right here... ' etc.

MCV warns of a looming summer price war. Not regarding strawberries, but rather videogames. Virgin Megastores reduced Ridge Racer Type 4 from £40 to £30. Still seems expensive, good as it is. This price war could be a good thing. Now, if only they could get games down to, say, £14.99, people might actually start buying them. Hey, and a lot of places are advertising N64s at £69.95. There really is no excuse for you not to get one. Unless you're skint. MCV also reports that Sony are planning to install PlayStation pods (sort of stands with consoles stuck to them) in public houses. Apparently, there's a pod at every Premiership football ground. Can joypads fully function after a night on the beer?
