Skimming the cream from the gaming press...

With Nintendo releasing the specs for 'Project Dolphin' on Friday, MCV missed out on the week's hottest news. Why? Because they go to press before rival trade paper CTW, who splashed Nintendo's 'Specs Appeal' across the front page. The machine, which is being developed in conjunction with IBM and Matsushita, will have a 400Mhz processor called Gekko and use DVD as its storage medium (wot no cartridge?!). "The hardware is very powerful but not expensive," said Nintendo of America's chairman Howard Lincoln. "We are absolutely confident that Dolphin will equal or exceed anything our friends at Sony can come up with for PlayStation 2. The Dolphin's CPU is second to none, it's the most powerful processor of any of the current or planned hardware systems."

CTW also leads with news that Sega are launching themselves as an Internet Service Provider and more disturbingly, that Eidos have signed up David Bowie to make tracks for a new 3D action adventure game, Omikron: The Nomad Soul. He will also be one of the game's 'characters'. Cripes... Also in the trade weekly is news that Electronic Arts have posted record revenue figures of $1.2 billion (£740 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31 1999 - the first games company to break the billion dollar figure. Roll on FIFA 2097...

Although MCV missed out on the Nintendo specs, they lead with the news that Activision have tied up a deal with Fox Interactive for the rights to all their sports titles in Europe. Apparently, the Sky Sports brand name will be used on the appropriate games (football titles, most likely). MCV obviously cover the Sega story in detail and lists nine games which should be available when Dreamcast launches here. They are: Sonic Adventure, Toy Commander, Metropolis Street Racer, House of the Dead 2, Virtua Fighter, Monaco Grand Prix, UEFA Striker, Powerstone and Incoming.

News that Infogrames have purchased top British studio DID is also front page news in MVC. DID's most recent game was the popular PC title Wargasm. DID founder Martin Kenwright is leaving the company, though. What will he be doing? Dunno... sorry.

Hey, and on page three of MCV, there's a little piece about MVC (that's MVC) dropping the price of the N64 to £49.99. Astonishing. Apparently, they're clearing out end-of-line solus machines.
