Surround sound and widescreen modes to become new standards for future Nintendo titles
Nintendo of America announced at E3 that all of their upcoming Rare-developed titles will feature both Dolby-licensed Pro-Logic Surround sound and a special widescreen mode, enhanced for 16x9 format widescreen television sets.
"We are planning to use surround sound and optional widescreen modes in all of our games in the future," a Nintendo spokesperson told IGN.
Nintendo are reportedly also talking to Dolby Labs to acquire the official Dolby stamp of approval for their MoSys surround system, developed by San Rafael-based Factor 5.
The first game on the N64 to include a 16x9 widescreen mode was Rare's GoldenEye. All upcoming Rare titles, including Jet Force Gemini, Donkey Kong 64 and Perfect Dark will utilise both the optional 16x9 view and Dolby Pro-Logic Surround sound.
