E3 special report

FG's Andy Smith gives you his final thoughts on this year's E3 in LA

Game of the show? Commandos 2 from Eidos. I had the privilege of seeing the game running at a 'behind the scenes, special guests only' video presentation, and can confirm that the sequel to the highly successful puzzle and stab 'em up of last year looks absolutely stunning.

The video I saw looked like some fancy FMV cut-scenes, but though you're bound to have heard this before, I can assure you that this was genuine in-game footage and boy, was it impressive. The basic gameplay ingredients have been kept (why change a winning formula?), the view perspective and core characters are the same, as is the setting - WWII. What's different, though, is the fantastic animation. The characters run convincingly, the vehicles drive realistically and to my eyes, the detail level has been turned way up. All that remains now is to get our hands on the thing. That should happen sometime later in the year.

On a different note, I popped down to the Bleem! stand and watched Gran Turismo running on a PC. Blimey, what an amazing piece of kit this emulator is. Bleem! had a couple of large screenshot posters up on their stand, one from the PlayStation running GT and the other from a PC running the game in 640 x 480 mode under Bleem! The difference was staggering and it certainly shifted as smoothly and as quickly as it does on the PlayStation.

Sony were not best pleased to see them at the show but despite their team of lawyers descending on the Bleem! stand and demanding they be ejected from the show, the Japanese giants succeeded only in forcing them to remove their posters.
