Indies Under Pressure

Dear Future Gamer

I totally agree with Joe K (FG34). Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll sounds like a rubbish interactive movie with some cartoon porn similar to Lula - The Sexy Empire. Jon Hare is bitter because he couldn't sell a game on its controversy, like the makers of Carmageddon and Phantasmagoria have.

Also, last Friday I went to my local Computer Exchange hoping to purchase Driver. I always go to Computer Exchange because they offer low prices and I can exchange old games for new ones (in this case it was Rollcage that I wanted to sell). However, I asked them if they had a copy of Driver and they said that because Virgin were selling the game at £29.99, they couldn't make any money matching that price because they're quite a small chain in comparison.

They also said that they wouldn't stock any more new PlayStation games because Virgin are selling them at such a low price. This was a bit of a shame because I couldn't exchange Rollcage for £18, only sell it to them for £14, costing me £4. I think Sony should start selling PlayStation games to retailers at lower prices to allow smaller chains to sell them at a profit because once Virgin starts pricing new games at £29.99, there's no going back.

FG: Whether Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll would have turned out to be a great game or not is open to debate. Jon Hare is convinced it would have been and he's got a track record that demands respect, but we'll probably never know. As for Virgin selling cheaper PlayStation games, you're not the only one concerned that this is going to affect the smaller chains and independent retailers. Maybe a complete move into second-hand games is the only way to compete. Would any smaller retailers out there like to share their thoughts with us?
