A Site For Sore Eyes
|
| The Hunger Site |
We've got a more serious site for you this month. Now we're not ones to start lecturing people and telling them they should be giving all their money to those less well off, but this is a really informative and well-designed site that allows you to help starving people for free.
Someone dies of starvation every 3.6 seconds, and three quarters of the deaths are children under five years old. The Hunger Site was set up to help alleviate this problem. It contains a lot of really useful information and links to official charity organisations, as well as a map, on which a country flashes every time someone there dies of starvation, which really brings home how serious this problem is.
The site was set up so you could make a difference - all you have to do is click on the Donate Free Food button and you'll be sent to a Thank You For Your Donation page. You don't have to pay anything as the donation is paid for by the corporate sponsors shown on this page. You can make a donation once every day and they pay half a cent each time the button is clicked. This may not sound like much, but that pays for half a cup of food and the total number of donations for August so far was 1,092,397, so there's a lot of people out there doing their bit for charity, and every bit helps.
The Press Association summed up The Hunger Site up by saying, "The whole point is collaboration, and worldwide co-operation... over time, with many people making a single donation each day, the organisers can gain enough income to make a sizeable contribution to the distribution of food in the Third World. It would seem that if only one site was worthy of being bookmarked this summer, The Hunger Site would be it."
Give it a visit and make a difference. Next week we'll no doubt be back onto tap-dancing squirrels or something, but this is one site worth bookmarking and revisiting whenever you can.
