Imagine this conversation between a games publisher and a developer:
Pub: "Right, we've got the licence to a big Hollywood blockbuster."
Dev: "When do you want a game based on it?"
Pub: "In about six weeks."
Dev: "Hmm. Doesn't give us much time to be creative."
Pub: "Does that matter?"
Dev: "S'pose not..."
Activision published the game Predator, a 2D sideways scrolling shoot 'em up licensed from the film of the same name, on the Amiga back in 1988 and it was dreadful.
The game's main character (supposed to be Arnold Schwarzenegger) looked like he had Paddington Bear's legs and a bad case of arthritis. The gameplay was simple fare - shoot the guerrillas that jumped out in front of you as you made your way through a South American jungle and avoid being targeted by the Predator.
The lack of playtesting was evident in that it was nigh on impossible to get through the first stage of the game, let alone reach the end showdown with the Predator itself. Your ammunition was prone to running out after the first five minutes, leaving you practically defenceless.
Predator really was a shockingly bad piece of software and did nothing to help the 'film tie-ins can be good' cause. We spit on it.
