Sega's Dreamcast is the most powerful games console available. While Sony's PlayStation2 and Nintendo's Dolphin look great on paper, the Dreamcast is right here, right now. It would appear that it lives up to the hype. Here's a list of those all-important features:
Four controller ports
Hitachi SH4 RISC processor (128bit 3D engine)
PowerVR 2DC graphics processor
Yamaha AICA 64-channel sound processor
12-speed GD-ROM drive (each disc can store over a gigabyte of data - 350Mb more than standard CDs)
16Mb SDRAM main memory
8Mb video memory
33.6Kbps modem
640 by 480 pixel screen resolution
Windows CE operating system
That's rather a lot of kit for £199, we reckon. In terms of real performance, the best thing to do is to look at one of the ported PC games, such as Rage Software's Incoming. It's identical to the PC version in every way, with beautifully textured landscapes and the fanciest lighting effects ever seen on a console. In our estimations you'd need to spend at least £600 on a PC and graphics card to get a similar performance.
