DC: Your Shout

With the Dreamcast launch this week, Rob Wilson has his say on why you should buy one...

I have to shout today about the imminent release of the Dreamcast in the UK. I've been hearing a lot of people saying that they aren't going to buy a Dreamcast because the PS2 is coming. Well, I'm here to try to plug the Dreamcast. Why? Not because I work for Sega or anything like that, but I have a Japanese Dreamcast and have to say that it's a superb machine. The people who are waiting for the PS2 are, to be honest, single-minded. If they aren't willing to at least look at the Dreamcast as a possible purchase then they should be strung up.

The PS2 hasn't proved anything yet, has it? Yes, there are some fancy specs and swish videos, but so far all we've seen are a couple of sequels (yawn) and a release date in Japan that's bound to slip. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the damn thing over here until 2001.

The Dreamcast, however, has everything going for it. A cheap (compared to others) launch price of £200 will make it competitive from the off. Also, at launch or soon after, the Dreamcast will have as many 'triple A' titles as the N64 has had in three years. I've been privileged to play Power Stone, the most unique and brilliant 3D fighting game for a long time; Sega Rally 2 is a very solid racing game, along with MSR, which is a hugely anticipated street racing game; and House of the Dead 2 is such a fun and pant soiling game (especially with two players) it will keep you coming back for more.
