Ready 2 Rumble page 2 of 2 |

Training is split into several simple mini-games, like a Parappa The Rappa-style one where you have to hit the right button when requested (helps to build up reflexes) or time a power bar's rise and fall to increase your fighter's strength. The better you train the more you win, and the more you win the better and richer you become.
As for the game itself, there are around 16 moves for each player (not including a small amount of combos) and, best of all, each worthy hit landed scores another letter on the R-U-M-B-L-E meter. Fill that up and it's time to get ugly. Pressing A and B together means your power stays on full for a few seconds, which can give you a huge advantage if you can land some good punches.
As for the downsides, a few more options wouldn't have gone amiss. Tag modes are all the rage and imagine a proper training mode where skills and moves could be honed to perfection. Maybe they're keeping that for the inevitable sequel, eh?
Ready 2 Rumble is as good a first generation Dreamcast game as we'd expect it to be. It's perfect for showing off to your PlayStation/N64-owning mates and it's wonderful for an after-the-pub brawl. Sadly, though, it lacks the staying power to be a real contender.

A fine game and no mistake. More options might have made it a classic, but it's fun as a one-player game and even better with some mates around. |
