Great Videogames Through The Ages

| Outrun (Sega Master System) |
What on Earth's a lowly Master System game doing here, you might ask? You'd be wrong to, though, because Outrun on the Master System is a stunning game. It might not look as lovely as its arcade parent, but the tiddly 8bit machine managed to recreate the feel and excitement splendidly.
It's a racing game. You're driving a Ferrari Testarossa through a series of increasingly difficult courses against a time limit. Simple enough, eh? However, there were some clever things about Outrun. The time limit was painfully tight and you really had to drive the car well if you were to get past the first or second checkpoint, but more importantly, Outrun was one of the first games to bring the route choice to the masses. The road ahead would fork at certain stages along your route, offering different ways to get to the next checkpoint, and although there were benefits and losses to each, everyone had their favourites. Bliss.
Outrun found massive favour with the public and was converted (very well in most cases) to all the 8bit machines of the time and, naturally, spawned a couple of sequels, like Outrun Turbo and Outrun Europa. Although they were good games, developers had quickly caught up and passed Sega's in-house team. Outrun shone brightly but briefly and we remember it with much fondness.
