Re-View
Rogue Squadron (N64)

Re-view is our attempt to step back a year and re-evaluate a game from that period to either redress the balance or re-affirm our views of it.

This time last year the excitement was building for the forthcoming new Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace. We hadn't seen it yet so were still unaware that it was largely pants. Keeping the hype-fire fuelled, though, was the release of a new Star Wars game for the N64 - Rogue Squadron.

We reviewed the game back in FG10 (January 14, 1999) and liked it a lot. Les Ellis turned to the Dark Side for us and decided that: "Rogue Squadron takes the best bits of the Shadows of the Empire fiasco, expands them, wraps them up in a great plot and delivers the finest Star Wars moments the N64 has ever been witness to. Watch the three digitally remastered movies and then play this to death for a real Jedi overdose." He scored the game a very impressive 87 per cent.

One year on and our opinion of the game is largely the same. We thoroughly enjoyed it but found its replay value lower than we anticipated. We'd drop the game's score down to around the 80 per cent mark these days but it's still good and we'd recommend you snapping up a copy if you see one around.
