Great Videogames Through The Ages
The Summoning (PC)

Back in the days of 386 processors, there weren't too many real-time RPG adventure games around. Well, there were some around but there weren't that many that were any good. The Summoning from SSI, however, was a masterpiece that stood out. Despite getting average reviews, this was a cracking RPG full of atmosphere and intriguing puzzles, and it was huge.

The game first appeared in 1992 and featured a lovely isometric viewing angle, but it was the gameplay that won it many followers. As well as the interesting puzzles, the game's combat was extremely well balanced and it took a few leaves out of the Dungeon Master book of death-dealing. Should you come up against a particularly strong baddie you could lure them to their own demise through a series of huge rolling balls or whatever - it was clever stuff and even more exciting because it was all happening in real-time. As mentioned before, the game didn't get the decent reviews it deserved but we don't care - we still reckon it's one of the most addictive games of its type and think it most certainly deserves its place in these hallowed halls.
