Mr Gates, with this console you are really spoiling us
Microsoft have set out the hard facts about their elusive X-Box at a secret meeting at their Seattle headquarters. The console will be Microsoft branded and will launch in the US by September 2001, shortly followed by a European release. A price has not been set, although it could be as little as $149 (about £100), depending on the price of Sony's PlayStation2.
The specifications, as revealed in the February 11 edition of trade paper MCV, are as follows:
In-built DVD, fully compatible with DVD movies
Windows-derived operating system
56k modem
Up to 1GHz processor
64Mb RAM
4Gb hard disk drive
That sounds like a pretty serious piece of kit to us, especially the 1GHz processor. But if this really was a "secret meeting", how come we've heard about it? Could it be just another underhand attempt at stealing Sony's thunder?
