Drat! It's Pat

Dear Future Gamer,

No matter how much you attempt to patronise me by calling me a "boy" and constantly "young Patrick Allan Gannon", I will not be patronised. First of all I must point out that David Rapp is wrong with his definition of "nefarious", and that you got it right in your reply to my original letter.

Also I clearly accepted that people will swear in offices, and no doubt in the PC Format office swearing is more than commonplace, my point was that it never got published on paper. I accept that my attack on you (editor) was a little harsh, but still letting that "F" word be published doesn't look good. When you said that people at The Times all swear, I'm sure a lot of them do (although it wasn't obvious from the recent fly-on-the-wall there), but do you pick up that paper and see the words in print? Or do you see very good, clean journalism?

If Michael Foster wishes to be called Mr. Foster, I suggest he signs his letters that way. In this day and age when we have a perverse media, who so happily stalk people for stories and then cry out that censorship against swearing is an outrage against democracy, how is anyone to know that Michael Foster isn't female? And by that why does he presume I am male? I don't sit in any ivory tower, it is you who put me up there, Mr. Foster. So are you suggesting that because I object to swearing and don't swear I am somehow higher than others? I don't see why, it is not hard to use language that isn't foul, I haven't achieved anything, other than a bit of pride.

Indeed, I take on board the argument against censorship. I always have. Censorship wouldn't be needed if society actually worked, which it no longer does. (Edited - big long spiel on the social history of England from the Dark Ages). So before you try patronising me again, consider the fact that I'm not just a weed-smoking teenager who has written a one-off letter to be awkward. I knew that if I took an anti-swearing stance I would receive negative reaction (hence why I'm still reading FG), it's a shame. It's so unpopular to have principles these days. I'm waiting for the replies saying "you're living in the past", but I'm not, I'm living now and thinking of the future. But it is within our past that we will find the keys to our future.

Patrick Allen Gannon

FG: Patrick, as you're 16 and I've survived to twice your age I believe I've earned the right to call you "boy". When you reach the age of 18 I'll revise my address to "young man". I believe you elicited so much negative response because you blatantly accused me of being an evil person, contributing to the downfall of society, simply because I allowed the occasional swear word to appear in my magazine. Most people, me included, who read Future Gamer, think you've adopted an uncommonly puritanical attitude on the subject.
