Immitate And Innovate

Dear Future Gamer,

I am writing in reply to the point made by Jinn in the Feedback section about being disappointed that a sequel was being released for PlayStation 2.

While I agree that too many companies release sequels simply to cash in, I do feel that there is a place for these sorts of games on the console. They may be the same old games in new clothes but this also means that a new generation of gamers can enjoy them as they have been essentially re-interpreted in view of the latest technology and tastes.

I thought Rayman was a good game and the fact that a sequel is being released on PlayStation 2 will mean that gamers that did not get the chance to play it the first time around will now get to do so. The rest of us can just ignore these sorts of games if we wish and just buy the "innovative" ones. Can't we?

Raf

FG: I can see your point Raf, but the problem with sequels is that they're usually developed at the expense of something innovative. What's worrying is that we'll see a slew of sequels because software houses are unwilling to spend large amounts of money on an innovative game that might bomb when it reaches the shops. It's far safer to develop a sequel to a best-seller than take a chance and though it might please those that want more of the same, where does it leave those of us who want to see something new?
