FG checks out Nintendo's cut-price classics...
James Price

Although slightly maligned by Super Nintendo veterans for being not quite the game they anticipated, Mario Kart 64 is a fine title nonetheless. While Mr Miyamoto laboured under the weight of an Ancient Mariner-style albatross - the Zelda project - MK64 was destined to receive only fleeting touches of his Midas-like genius. The result? A game that is almost universally acclaimed as a classic, yet berated for not being good enough. An odd dichotomy, that.

Some would argue that Rare's take on this sub-genre, the excellent Diddy Kong Racing, has a better one-player mode. And, you know, they might just have a point. But Mario Kart 64 remains one of the best multiplayer games you'll ever encounter.
