Yo Yo's Puzzle Park page 2 of 2 |
PlayStation |
The triangle makes him jump over objects (don't land on a blob or a bomb!) and enables him to move between platforms. Once all the platforms are cleared you move onto the next level. There is a time limit, and you only have a few lives, but bombs do reappear if you begin to run low.
The early screens can be done fairly easily in minutes, but things get progressively tougher as you go on. After a while you start coming across blobs which have mysterious powers and blobs which act unpredictably. The platform negotiation becomes more tricky too, and the bombs start getting more dangerous to use (set the wrong one off and, unless you're in the right place at the right time, the whole place goes up). It's all good clean fun and very, very addictive.
It makes a pleasant change to come across a fetching little game like this. Distinctly, nay, verily retro in look, it's a far cry from the stunning visuals we're fast becoming used too. Not a polygon in sight, flat as a pancake and no uzi clips to be found anywhere, Yo Yo represents a return to the old-fashioned gaming values of cheesy music, fast, more-ish gameplay and a surface crapness which hides a cunning mind behind it.
It may not be the type of game to draw many admiring gasps from the crowd, but once you start playing it you realise that Yo Yo is a little gem. If you take the plunge and buy it (and it will only cost you thirty quid, after all) you'll find out that Yo Yo is more than a mere curiosity piece which should be in a museum.

An old-fashioned but addictive platform puzzler which has oodles of charm and cleverness, and a long shelf-life. |
