In 1987, Peter Molyneux founded Bullfrog Productions in Surrey, England. His aim was to create a revolutionary new strategy game, Populous, which went on to sell over four million copies and made Bullfrog a household name. How are you supposed to follow that? Well, how about Powermonger, Syndicate, Magic Carpet and Dungeon Keeper? Each sold well over 500,000 copies, ensuring that Bullfrog became known as one of the most innovative game design studios in the world. And let's not forget Theme Park - a game that sold over 3.5 million copies and became something of a sensation in Japan.
1995 saw Molyneux sell off Bullfrog to Electronic Arts, a deal that made him a very wealthy man. He stayed on as managing director until early 1997, when he decided that he wasn't suited to a big corporation. Within weeks of his departure from Bullfrog, Molyneux was approached by most of the big players in the games industry, including Sega, Nintendo and Eidos. But he was having none of it, opting instead to form Lionhead Studios again in Guildford.
If all goes to plan, Lionhead's first game Black & White will be released by the end of 1999 on PC. This complex strategy/god sim is packed with the usual innovative features associated with a Molyneux title, and set to elevate game design to a whole new level. Check it out at Lionhead Studios
