Great Videogames Through The Ages
Tomahawk (Spectrum)

Digital Integration had somewhat revolutionised the flight sim genre back in the mid '80s with the release of Fighter Pilot. Up until then, budding pilots pretty much had to be content with flying Cessnas. Fighter Pilot gave them the chance to fire at things.

Tomahawk did the same thing for the helicopter genre in 1986. The game's graphics were vector, the sound limited to a 'fblop, fblop, fblop, fblop' approximation of rotor blades and the gameplay was tremendous. Once you'd got past the Lenslock security device (see The Language of Videogames, FG26) hours could pass as you swooped around the mostly barren landscape in your attack helicopter, taking out the pesky Ruskies. Tomahawk is deserving of its place in this Hall of Fame because it was one of the first games to combine realism (of a 48k sort) with action. Fantastic stuff. Digital Integration are still going, though as a part of Titus now. They're currently working on a new combat flight simulator, this time using planes, called F18E Super Hornet, which is previewed right here.
