Nintendo's Peter Main speaks on DVD functionality, Internet strategy and Game Boy Advance
At a press conference in New York today, Nintendo's Peter Main revealed a few new details regarding their next-generation console. While the Nintendo executive spoke broadly about the system, he did touch on important subjects, including DVD functionality, Internet connectivity and the Game Boy Advance relationship.
"I can assure you that we're hard at work creating a Dolphin machine that will meet or exceed the performance of PlayStation2," reassured Main. "But at the same time, we're very comfortable holding our cards close to the vest, seeing what Sega are delivering and listening to what Sony are promising."
Two versions of Dolphin are still planned, one as a gaming machine only and the other as an entertainment unit that plays both Dolphin software and DVD movies. While previous reports indicated that DVD movie playback options would remain exclusive to Japan, Main seemed to indicate that Nintendo and Matsushita were taking a 'wait and see' attitude on the possibility of releasing the features elsewhere.
"We have teamed up with Matsushita to produce both a streamlined, games-only Dolphin console which will launch around the world," said Main. "Matsushita are also employing that same Dolphin technology inside a more diverse home entertainment device to be marketed initially in Japan." While the Nintendo executive was unwilling to provide details about the company's Internet strategy, he did confirm that one is definitely planned. "Will Dolphin have [Internet] connectivity? Yes, but I'm not at liberty to provide details yet."
More facts, it seems, will be forthcoming soon enough, according to Main. "In the near future, we'll be announcing some intriguing ways for connecting Game Boy Advance to the Dolphin console."
More soon.
