Sony Alive and Well

Dear Future Gamer

With regard to the letter 'Sony are Dead' (FG66), though it's true that the delays will influence the impact of the new system, it's not really comparable to the delays suffered by the Dreamcast in its respective Japanese launch.

The Dreamcast effectively had one quality title on launch, Virtua Fighter 3tb, while PS2 still has Ridge Racer 5, Street Fighter Ex3, Kessen and Let's Go By Train, which, though unknown in the west, is huge in Japan. By the end of March, Tekken Tag Tournament, Type - S and others will join the launch titles. Furthermore, PS2 has a number of RPGs which are soon to be released, including Eternal Ring and Evergrace on launch, although no-one knows if they'll be any good, and they form the solid foundation on which a user base is built in Japan. DC is still severely lacking in this area.

Sorry to all PlayStation haters, but the smart money is still on Sony.

FG: Sega had a few hiccups but they've got some very strong titles out now and anyway, people don't tend to buy masses of games in the first couple of months of owning a new console. The Dreamcast has done well in Japan (and elsewhere) and as long as the flow of good games continues, I can't see any reason why it shouldn't continue to do well. Sony have been wise to ensure there are plenty of games available at launch, to appeal to as diverse an audience as possible, but just a couple would have appeased most people.
